Selecting the Right Ladder Type

Single Section Ladder

If you use the ladder to access and go onto a roof, say for an inspection, then the ladder must be long enough to extend three feet beyond the roofline.   • Your Weight; plus
  • The Weight of Your Clothing and Protective Equipment; plus
  • The Weight of Tools and Supplies You Are Carrying; plus
  • The Weight of Tools and Supplies Stored on the Ladder

There are five categories of ladder Duty Ratings:

Type IAA (Extra Heavy Duty) Maximum performance and durability for the toughest professional or home use jobs.375 pounds
Type IA (Extra Heavy Duty)Rugged performance designed with professional use in mind.300 pounds
Type I (Heavy Duty)Designed to handle most projects and jobs.250 pounds
Type II (Medium Duty)The basic design for simple projects.225 pounds
Type III (Light Duty)  Economical design for lightweight use.200 pounds

The Duty Rating of your ladder can be found on the specifications label.  Safety standards require a Duty Rating sticker to be placed on the side of every ladder.  Do not assume that a longer ladder has a higher weight capacity.   There is no relationship between ladder length and weight capacity.

Selecting the right amount of maneuverability

Do not exceed the weight rating of a ladder.
Climb facing the ladder.
Maintain at least three points of contact at all times (two feet and a hand or two hands and a foot) when using a ladder.
Use tool belts to carry your tools rather than carrying them in your hands.
Avoid over-reaching. Keep the center of your body between the rails when using a ladder.

Aluminum Extrusion is All Around

Aluminum extrusion transforms aluminum alloy into an extraordinary variety of products for consumer and industrial markets. Aluminum extrusions have many uses in the electronics, automotive, mass transit, bridge decking, telecommunications, solar/renewable energy industries, and more.

Many of those fabrications, , use extruded aluminum section. As you may have noticed, we’re fans of this material. That’s because it simplifies fabrication assembly while improving strength and stiffness. It’s also lightweight, corrosion-resistant and good-looking. (You can polish it to a shine, anodize it, coat it or paint it.)

These properties make it ideal for a wide range of applications. In fact you might be surprised to learn just how many uses for extrusion there are.

Common Applications

Producing a ranked list would mean debating definitions and whether to use tons, yards or dollars. We argue enough as it is, so we’ve just gone with an alphabetical list drawn from what we know.

Architecture

This category of applications ranges from railings and balustrades to building facades and bleachers. As extruded aluminum section is stiff and lightweight it’s ideal for applications like canopies where the structure can’t weigh much but must handle a load. (High stiffness means you need less of it, which translates to more weight-saving.) It also looks attractive uncoated and as it doesn’t rust, exposure to rain isn’t a concern.

Automotive

Aluminum is also ideal for automotive applications like trailers. Keeping trailer weight low lets your tow vehicle devote more of its torque to hauling the stuff you actually want to shift and less to moving the trailer itself. It’s also used extensively in RV’s for the same reason, plus it won’t rust and can be polished up to look almost like chrome, so it’s good for decoration too.

Display equipment

Almost every stand you’ve ever seen at a trade show or exhibition was constructed with a great deal of extruded material. That’s because extruded section can be designed so pieces interlock, making assembly quick and easy. It’s easy to move around too, and it can be finished any number of ways for an attractive and durable appearance.

In the same vein, point-of-sale displays and display cabinets are other examples of aluminum extrusion used for display equipment.

Framing

By using inserts to join lengths of extrusion pieces it’s easy to build various kinds of frames. Picture frames might be the most obvious, but a rapidly growing application is frames to hold solar panels. As these are often roof-mounted, aluminum’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant nature makes it the ideal material.

Industrial

Walk through any factory, (ours included,) and you’re almost guaranteed to see aluminum extrusion being put to work. It’s the material of choice for equipment like workbenches, inspection tables and carts because it’s easy to cut and drill, lightweight yet stiff, and good value-for-money. It also has the added attraction of being extendible: if a workbench needs modifying that’s quickly done.

Aluminum is a common metal used for both industrial and non-industrial applications. In most cases, it can be difficult to choose the correct Aluminum grade for your intended application. If your project does not have any physical or structural demands, and the aesthetics are not important, then almost any Aluminum grade will do the job.

Alloy 1100: This grade is commercially pure aluminum.It is soft and very ductile material, with excellent workability,making it ideal for applications with difficult forming. It can be welded using any method, but it is non heat-treatable.It has an excellent resistance to corrosion and is commonly used in the chemical and food processing industries.

 

WHAT ALUMINUM GRADE SHOULD I USE?

Alloy 2024 : This grade is heat-treatable aluminum alloy with copper as the primary alloying element. It is used in applications requiring high strength to weight ratio, as well as good fatigue resistance. Due to its high strength and fatigue resistance, 2024 is widely used in aircraft structures.

WHAT ALUMINUM GRADE SHOULD I USE?

Alloy 3004This grade  is a non- heat treatable aluminum alloy with manganese as its primary alloying element. It is similar to 3003 except for the addition of approximately 1% magnesium. It can be used to produce tempers with a higher strength but a lower ductility.

WHAT ALUMINUM GRADE SHOULD I USE?

Alloy 5052:  This is the highest strength alloy of the more non heat-treatable grades. Its fatigue strength is higher than most other aluminum grades. Alloy 5052 has a good resistance to marine atmosphere and salt water corrosion, and excellent workability. It can be easily drawn or formed into intricate shapes

WHAT ALUMINUM GRADE SHOULD I USE?

Alloy 6061:  The most versatile of the heat-treatable aluminum alloys, while keeping most of the good qualities of aluminum. This grade has a great range of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. It can be fabricated by most of the commonly used techniques and it has good workability in the annealed condition. It is welded by all methods and can be furnace brazed. The Tube and Angle shapes in this grade typically have rounded corners.

Alloy 7075:  This is one of the highest strength aluminum alloys available. It has an excellent strength-to weight ratio, and it is ideally used for highly stressed parts. This grade can be formed in the annealed condition and subsequently heat treated, if needed. It can also be spot or flash welded (arc and gas not recommended).

Aluminum extrusion is used to create lengths of aluminum of a fixed cross-sectional profile. Through extrusion, very complex cross-sections can be created with excellent strength and surface finish. The process of aluminum extrusion works by forcing a block of metal, known as a billet, to pass through the die opening of smaller cross-sectional area than the billet itself.

The Process of Aluminum Extrusion
The process of aluminum extrusion consists of the following steps:

  • After designing and creating the shape of the die, a cylindrical billet of aluminum alloy is heated to 800°F-925°F.
  • The aluminum billet is then transferred to a loader, where a lubricant is added to prevent it from sticking to the extrusion machine, the ram or the handle.
  • Substantial pressure is applied to a dummy block using a ram, which pushes the aluminum billet into the container, forcing it through the die.
  • To avoid the formation of oxides, nitrogen in liquid or gaseous form is introduced and allowed to flow through the sections of the die. This creates an inert atmosphere and increases the life of the die.
  • The extruded part passes onto a run-out table as an elongated piece that is now the same shape as the die opening. It is then pulled to the cooling table where fans cool the newly created aluminum extrusion.
  • When the cooling is completed, the extruded aluminum is moved to a stretcher, for straightening and work hardening.
  • The hardened extrusions are brought to the saw table and cut according to the required lengths.
  • The final step is to treat the extrusions with heat in age ovens, which hardens the aluminum by speeding the aging process.

Additional complexities may be applied during this process to further customize the extruded parts. For example, to create hollow sections, pins or piercing mandrels are placed inside the die. After the extrusion process, a variety of options are available to adjust the colour, texture and brightness of the aluminum’s finish. This may include aluminum anodizing or painting.

Today, aluminum extrusion is used for a wide range of purposes, including components of the International Space Station. These diverse applications are possible due to the advantageous attributes of aluminum, from its particular blend of strength and ductility to its conductivity, its non-magnetic properties and its ability to be recycled repeatedly without loss of integrity. All of these capabilities make aluminum extrusion a viable and adaptable solution for an growing number of manufacturing needs.
